We were delighted to work with Gloucester Cathedral to design and weave the carpet for their Chapter House.

The brief from the cathedral team was for a design to be based on, and sympathetic to, the existing tiled floor so as to maintain the tone of the aesthetic. The complex job was specified by Andrew Bayliss at LGM ltd who also oversaw the fitting.

This was a complicated job because the carpets need to be lifted regularly as the Chapter House is often used for filming. This necessitated the highest quality carpet to maintain appearance and shape and a sophisticated fitting solution to ensure the historic tiled floor was not damaged.  The new carpet also has the advantages of protecting the original floor, as well as providing sound deadening qualities and keeping the space warmer.

Working closely with the Chief Operating Officer of the Cathedral, our design team originated an opulent design, in rich reds and burnt orange, based on the tile design. There’s a beautiful order to the geometric uniformity of the overall piece, and a timeless elegance to the ornate detail of the replicated tiles .

This axminster carpet was woven on our high speed loom in our standard wool-rich yarn and in 10 row quality.   This quality is suitable for extremely high traffic areas, offering fantastic durability and appearance retention, luxurious underfoot comfort and long lifetime value.

“We were delighted to be part of this project for Gloucester Cathedral” Comments Alan Whittle, Sales and Marketing Director at Wilton Carpets.

“It was a complex job, offering the very highest quality solution for this important heritage building. It was a great opporunity to work in conjunction with the cathedral team to arrive at this beautiful solution which will complement the Chapter House for many years to come .”
