The Worshipful Company of Stationers and Newspaper Makers is the City of London Livery Company for the Communications and Content Industries. At over 600 years old, it’s the 3rd oldest such company in London, and the birthplace of copyright. The organisation has an ambitious plan to develop their Hall, maintaining the value of this asset for future generations of members of the print, paper, publishing, packaging, newspaper, broadcasting and online media industries.
Part of that development was the refurbishment of the Court Room and Card Room (Two rooms in one room). The spaces are used for events for the company as well as a revenue source, being available for hire for receptions, wedding ceremonies and formal dining occasions.
Client Brief
In design terms, the carpet needed to be in keeping with the building and to be similar to, but not the same as the previous carpet as even though the room was being repainted, the Company wished to keep the same colour scheme, while freshening up the tones.
The busy, prestigious location demanded a hard wearing, luxurious carpet that doesn’t look overly busy but with enough pattern design to look in keeping with a Grade I listed historic venue.
Creative Approach
The Guild was established in 1403, and wanted to maintain their classic scheme in keeping with their historic building. With guidance from our Project Consultant, Pauline Gramson, they drew inspiration from the existing carpet and architectural motifs within the building. Pauline worked closely with the client to get to know the space, with careful consideration given to the wider colour scheme. There were several iterations of the design, particularly the more complex border sections, eventually settling on a blue fleck element to team perfectly with the new curtains.
